Coercion

It could be argued that women who opt out of some conversations, who avoid certain, most, or all online venues, and/or who post only photos of their Reuben sandwiches or Miniature Schnauzers are making free decisions rather than being gagged or coerced. There is good evidence, however, that gendered cyberhate does constitute a form of coercion and, as such, is undermining women’s autonomy and freedom. In philosophy, the term ‘hard choice’ is used to describe a choice situation in which rejecting a proposal puts one in dire straits, but accepting the proposal is also unpalatable (Wertheimer, 1987: 233). Thus, for Alan Wertheimer, ‘the family of coercion terms’ can be plausibly used to describe hard choice situations (1987: 233). Such hard choice scenarios are relevant to the legal defense of duress which applies to situations in which a person of ‘reasonable firmness’ is unable to resist a threat and is therefore coerced into a course of action (Morse, 2009: 268–9).
